The Humble Photographer ...
So, as you have likely already read, I do more than just woodworking. Mainly, I do woodworking to fill a need. Well, right now my photography hobby needs a thousand dollar robotic mount. I can't build lenses (although I'm trying ... more on that later), but I can build a custom non-robotic mount for doing panoramas. Check out the wlog for details; I need to have one done before June when I'll get the opportunity to use it for a quick trip to the mountains.
UPDATE: Mount #1 is done!

The Humble Tailor?
Welcome woodworkers! I haven't updated in quite some time, so now I'm letting you know why! My daughters have American Girl Dolls. If you have 6-10 year old daughters and don't know what they are, count your blessings! The dolls are pretty expensive, but the clothes are ridiculous! Fortunately, i'm about as comfortable with a sewing machine as I am a table saw, so I spent much of the past several months (especially leading up to Christmas) sewing outfits and more recently, teaching my oldest how to sew her own doll clothes. Working 40-60 hours a week, I generally only find time for 1 hobby at a time, but I have started a new woodworking project: Shrinking my workshop 50%.
Let's recap: I own a 3 bedroom house and we just had a 3rd child. I built a home office in my garage and a storage closet for my wife, the remainder of the garage has been my shop. My girls have shared a room all their lives, but my son now occupies the room that had been their playroom. My kids need a playroom more than I need a large shop.
The first step was to sufficiently clean the garage; this took 8-12 hours each of the past 3 Saturdays, but is finally done.

Welcome, Humble Woodworkers!
My name is Don, and I am a Humble Woodworker. (Hi Don)
Husband of a wonderful stay-at-home mom, father of 3 beautiful children and son of an accountant, all of my projects tend to be done on a shoestring (or in some cases, half a shoestring). I've accumulated some tools over the years, but I still run a pretty humble shop.
This site has been created to encourage other Humble Woodworkers. You know who you are. Do you still only own a tablesaw and a drill so all of your projects exclusively have straight lines and are fastened with (often reclaimed) screws? When you buy a sheet of plywood/MDF/etc, do you take a drawing and list of cuts to the hardware store to have the associate do most of your cutting for you? Do you watch for furniture on large trash day from which you can salvage pieces? When something you build is not longer needed, do the larger pieces of wood & any hardware (including screws) get reused? Does all of the wood in your shop have a little green paint on it? Does all your paint have an orange spot on the can & no UPC? Be proud! You may never be a Norm Abram or even a Steve Ramsey, but that's OK. The main thing is that you enjoy what you do.
By the way: that list above? All but the first two (ok, sometimes the second one) still apply to me. Did you perhaps not recognize the significance of the green/orange paint above? Then read on, brother (or sister), let me show you the way!
